Why does Premature Balding occur in Men?

Losing a huge amount of hair daily is called premature baldness, especially if it happens in the early teens or twenties. The first stage of premature baldness is hair thinning. When a person loses hair strands quickly, the scalp is visible between the hair shafts. It’s quite natural to lose 100 hair strands per day. Hair follicles rejuvenate and generate new hair stands. Sometimes the hair fall increases and regeneration stops for many reasons, which is where balding starts.
The main cause for early hair fall could be hereditary, hormonal changes, medical conditions, or a normal part of ageing. Other causes include the excess presence of vitamin A, insufficient protein, nutritional deficiencies, iron deficiency, and anaemia. Illness or stress can also lead to sudden hair fall. It’s more common for men to lose their hair. But one can overcome it through lifestyle changes, medications or hair transplantation.
Causes for premature baldness:
It is common for men to get bald in their early twenties. Below we look at the causes of premature baldness in men:
Family history: Heredity plays a major key role in premature balding. The risk of balding is predominant if it runs on the paternal or maternal side of the family. As confirmed in recent research, most hereditary balding would be from the mother’s side, especially for men.
Hormonal imbalance: Hormonal imbalance majorly causes temporary hair loss and can have a severe impact. The male hormone testosterone causes severe hair loss. The 5 alpha-reductase enzyme found in the hair follicles converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the most potent androgen that promotes androgenetic alopecia, commonly known as the pattern of male baldness or premature hair loss.
Medical conditions: Medical conditions such as cancer, arthritis, depression, gout, high blood pressure, and heart problems can cause hair loss.
Medication and supplements: Taking too much Vitamin A is also one of the reasons for hair loss. Certain medications, such as antifungals, can cause hair loss. Once you stop using the medication, it takes about 6 months for the hair to grow back.
Radiation therapy: When a person is exposed to radiation, it causes hair loss. Cancer causes hair loss up to 75 to 100 per cent. Radiation affects the cancer cells and also the healthy cells. The cells which make hair grow are also affected. After the treatment, many patients opt for wigs.
Stress: Stress pushes many hair follicles into the resting phase. After a few months, the hair falls off suddenly, even with simple combing and hair washing. Reachers revealed that stress factors such as physical, emotional, injury, and anxiety cause hair loss.
Pollution: Due to pollution, most people have hair loss issues. As the hair is exposed to polluted air, the scalp becomes oily and greasy. The hair follicles are blocked with dirt, eventually weakening the root of the hair and causing breakage at the roots.
Excessive hairstyling: According to specialists, styling damages the roots, eventually resulting in thin hair or total loss in the affected area. Too much pulling of the hair causes stress for the hair follicles resulting in hair loss.
Preventive measures to avoid premature balding
Coconut spa: The oil’s fatty acids help strengthen the hair roots and increase hair growth, giving good results if applied twice a week. The oil penetrates the hair shafts and reduces protein loss from the hair. Regular massage increases blood circulation and improves the scalp’s health.
Onion juice: Onion has proven its importance in the hair fall industry. Onion juice increases blood supply to the hair follicles by providing natural nourishment. Regular users of onion juice have shiny, healthy, long hair. If applied once a week, it shows good results.
Healthy diet: A healthy and proper nutritional diet is good for hair and the overall body. To reduce hair fall, the regular diet should have green leafy vegetables, carrots, eggs, chicken, dry fruits, yoghurt, and fruits rich in Vitamin-C, such as oranges, grapes, berries, and cherries. Including beetroot juice in the diet is a healthy option. This reduces nutritional deficiency that causes hair fall. In recent studies, it has been found that pumpkin seeds increase hair growth within 3 months.
Protect hair while sleeping: Certain pillows protect the hair from getting damaged due to friction, tangling, and tugging. Sleeping with wet hair weakens the strands causing breakage, as the hair becomes vulnerable when wet.
Essential oils for hair: Essential oils such as jojoba oil, lavender oil, peppermint oil, tea tree oil etc., boost hair growth.
Antioxidants to the scalp: Using antioxidant shampoos will decrease hair loss and improve the scalp’s health. The shampoos containing antioxidants such as piroctone olamine improved hair growth and scalp conditions within 8 weeks.
Aloe vera gel: Applying natural aloe vera gel to the hair soothes the scalp and conditions the hair. It also unblocks the hair follicles blocked due to excessive oils.
Lemon juice: Applying lemon fresh lemon juice to the hair just before 10 minutes of head bath enhances the hair quality and growth. Daily lemon oil helps maintain a healthy scalp and increases hair growth.
Green tea: Drinking green tea increases metabolism, revitalises hair follicles, and increases hair production.
Indian gooseberry(Amla): Amla is a very rich major source of Vitamin-C. Its beneficial properties, such as antioxidants and antibacterial properties, prevent dandruff and scalp inflammation. It helps to keep the scalp clean by providing the required nutrition to the hair roots, making them strong and shinier.
Neem leaves: Neem has many medicinal properties and is a very effective herb for hair loss. It has good antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, thus strengthening hair follicles and increasing hair growth.
Surgical treatment for hair loss
Surgical options are not recommended at a young age, like teenage or in the 20s, since hair fall does not stabilise by that time. So one has to wait until their 30s to try out the below surgical options. The most popular and successful surgical options are:-
Follicular Unit Transplant(FUT): In this procedure, the strips of skin from the back side of the head are taken and transplanted into the bald area. The extracted strip should be at most 1 to 1.5 centimetres in width. This medical process is done under local anaesthesia. Only the scalp is made numb. The procedural time is about 4 to 8 hours for the surgery. It’s a long-standing solution for baldness.
Follicular Unit Extraction(FUE): In this medical procedure, individual hair follicles are taken and implanted in the bald area. The surgeon doing this procedure requires more skill. 150 to 5,000 grafts are harvested from the recipient’s area and implanted in the donor’s area. This procedure is done under local anaesthesia and takes about 8 to 10 hours.
Platelet-Rich Plasma(PRP): PRP is the most effective and latest non-surgical technique for hair restoration.
- Step -1- Platelet-Poor Plasma: In this procedure, the blood from the bald area is collected and kept in a centrifuge machine which separates blood flowing into plasma and red blood cells. Further, the plasma is subjected to a rapid spinning process, separating the rich and poor plasma.
- Step -2 – In this second process of centrifugation, two main steps are included: low-speed and high-speed centrifugation. These low and high centrifugations are done to get concentrated blood plasma of the needed quality.
- Step -3- A syringe injects platelets into the affected area. Then gradually improvises the healing process.
